MAZDA Service Essentials: Wheel Alignment

Mazda Service

Some cars rely on sheer power to impress. The MAZDA brand takes a different approach, emphasizing balance above all else. While the SKYACTIV®-G engine is important, each vehicle’s SKYACTIV®-Chassis plays an outsized role in the excellent handling enjoyed in the tiny Mazda MX-5 Miata all the way up to the three-row Mazda CX-9.

One of the most important parts of a well-tuned chassis is proper wheel alignment, maintained at a Mazda service center.

What is wheel alignment?

We’d all agree that traction matters, but it’s important to note that traction is just one ingredient in good handling. The tires that provide that traction are mounted on wheels, which in turn are attached to axles.

The way each of those parts relates to the other in three-dimensional space (what we call toe, camber, and caster) ensures that steering input is as precise as it should be, that it corners properly, and that it will stay in a straight line when left to its own devices.

How do wheels go out of alignment?

When your wheels are off their axis, your vehicle won’t handle properly. This usually stems from one or more of the following causes:

  • One or more Mazda parts in your suspension or chassis are worn
  • Your vehicle has suffered impact damage, which is as likely to come from a curb strike or pothole as from a fender bender
  • Suspension issues can also arise from improper loading, driving habits, or certain modifications

How can I tell if my wheels are misaligned?

If your vehicle no longer handles the way it did when you bought or leased it, have your wheel alignment checked.

  • Does it take more effort to steer?
  • Does your vehicle drift?
  • Does the wheel struggle to return to center?
  • Are you noticing uneven tire wear?
  • Do you hear noises when turning or steering?

Drivers can address some handling issues without visiting an Easton Mazda dealership. Check your tire pressure and make sure your vehicle is loaded correctly. But if that doesn’t solve the problem, the technicians at Young Mazda can determine whether your issue stems from a need for new tires, a power steering issue, or your alignment.
